Neither rain nor snow nor high winds can prevent U.S. Postal workers from delivering mail.
But at least they get to do their job in the daytime while getting paid.
Not so for Mobile Eye volunteers serving the Round Lake area villages. "We get called anytime of the day or night," said Captain Kevin Lamb, who has been a volunteer for the last eight years.
"In the summer months we get called out at least once a week. We help the police departments with traffic control, in case of accidents, tornadoes, fires and other disasters," he added.
Mobile Eye also helps the community as escorts at parades and funerals.
Mobile Eye volunteers, wearing their orange vest, can been seen directing traffic at nearly all of the events in the community, including the Fourth of July and other parades.
Currently there are 25 members, but Lamb said Mobile Eye would like to have another 30 volunteers including Spanish speaking residents because of the relatively large Hispanic population in the community.
Led by long-time Commander Don Portzen the Mobile Eye is probably the longest running and most successful volunteer organization in the greater Round Lake Area.
Some of the other volunteers include Assistant Commander Robert Reily, Captain Dieter Moll, Assistant Captain Kevin Stateler, and Secretary/Treasurer Donna Beal.
Round Lake Beach Police Lt. Lenny Revelle is the police liaison.
The Round Lake Area Mobile Eye is a voluntary organization created to provide community service and to assist law enforcement agencies.
Volunteers must possess the following characteristics: good moral
character; clean driving record; be available to drive patrol one weekend a month; have plenty of time to
attend training exercises and be willing to have a personal background check.
